Pio Alberto del Corona OP (born July 5, 1837 in Livorno , † August 15, 1912 in Florence ) was an Italian clergyman and bishop of San Miniato . He is venerated as a blessed in the Catholic Church.

Life

Pio Alberto del Corona grew up as the fourth and youngest child of a shoe retailer in Livorno. At the age of 17 he entered the Dominican order in Florence and made profession on November 3, 1859 . He was ordained deacons on December 21 of the same year and ordained priest on February 5 of the following year .

In 1872 he founded the Dominican Sisters of the Holy Spirit with Elena Bonaguidi in Florence, with a kindergarten and school.

Pope Pius IX appointed him on December 21, 1874 coadjutor bishop of San Miniato and titular bishop of Drasus . Cardinal Dean Costantino Patrizi Naro donated him episcopal ordination on January 3 of the following year .

With the death of Annibale Barabesis on February 2, 1897, he followed this as Bishop of San Miniato. On August 30, 1907, Pope Pius X accepted his resignation from the diocese of San Miniato and appointed him titular Archbishop of Serdica .

Adoration

Pio Alberto Del Corona was considered a deeply pious and ascetic man who spent long hours in prayer at night. He was a pastor with great empathy and a keen sense for social problems, a powerful preacher and a well-read spiritual writer. When he died he was called by the people of holiness.

After he was first buried on the Cimitero della Misericordia in Florence, in 1925 the bones were transferred to the crypt of the monastery church of the Dominican Sisters of the Holy Spirit.

At the request of the Diocese of San Miniato, the beatification process was opened in 1942 . In 2001 his relics were solemnly raised in the presence of four bishops . Pope Francis awarded him the heroic degree of virtue on October 9, 2013 , and on September 17, 2014 confirmed a miracle healing attributed to his intercession. The beatification was performed by the Cardinal Prefect of the Congregation for the Causes of the Saints , Angelo Amato , on September 19, 2015 on behalf of Pope Francis in San Miniato.
