Michael Sheetz
Michael Patrick Sheetz (born before 1968) is a cell biologist at Columbia University . He is considered a pioneer in mechanobiology and biomechanics .
Life
Sheetz earned a bachelor's degree from Albion College in 1968 and a Ph.D. at the California Institute of Technology (Caltech). As a postdoctoral fellow , he worked at the University of California, San Diego , before receiving a first professorship (1974 Assistant Professor , 1980 Associate Professor ) in Physiology at the University of Connecticut at Farmington , Connecticut . In 1985 he went to Washington University in St. Louis , Missouri , as a professor of cell biology and physiology . From 1990 to 2000, Sheetz professor ( "Professor and Chairman") of Cell Biology at Duke University Medical School in Durham , North Carolina . Since 2000 he has been William R. Kenan, Jr. Professor of Cell Biology at Columbia University in New York City .
Act
Sheetz made important contributions to the elucidation of the mechanisms involved in the directed intracellular transport of macromolecules. This includes the functionality of Dynein and Kinesin on microtubules . Sheetz's work deals on the one hand with the mechanisms by which proteins work together like machines, on the other hand with the biological processes in which these protein complexes are involved, including processes as diverse as fertilization or brain function. Disorders of the kinesin structure could be associated with hereditary diseases such as Charcot-Marie-Tooth's disease.
Sheetz is concerned with the forces that cells can exert and with what effect external forces have on cellular metabolism and cellular behavior ( e.g. cell division ).
