Timothy J. Richmond

Timothy John Richmond (born October 9, 1948 in Corvallis ) is an American molecular biologist.

Richmond graduated from Purdue University with a bachelor's degree in 1970 and received his PhD in 1975 from Yale University with Frederic M. Richards and Thomas A. Steitz with a dissertation on protein-DNA interaction. In 1978 he was a post-doctoral student at the MRC Laboratory of Molecular Biology in Cambridge with Aaron Klug , where he studied chromatin . In 1980 he was permanently employed in the laboratory and in 1984 clarified the structure of the nucleosome core component with an X-ray structure analysis at 7 Angstrom resolution. For this he received the Max Perutz Major Award. In 1987 he became a professor at the ETH Zurich, where he improved the study of the nucleosome in ever higher resolution up to 2.8 Angstrom in 1997 and 1.9 Angstrom in 2002 (for this he received the 1997 Johnson Award of the University of Pennsylvania and the Louis-Jeantet- Price 2002). His laboratory also uses X-ray structure analysis to examine various gene-regulating proteins in DNA, for example for transcription factors and the chromatin fiber.

In 2004 he became a member of the Leopoldina , 2007 the National Academy of Sciences , 2000 the Academia Europaea , 1994 the American Association for the Advancement of Science and he became a member of the European Molecular Biology Organization (EMBO) in 1995 . In 2006 he received the Marcel Benoist Prize and in 2002 the Louis Jeantet Prize . In 2001 he received an honorary doctorate from Purdue University .
