Ueli Schibler (born June 16, 1947 in Olten ) is a Swiss chronobiologist .

Schibler studied from 1967 at the University of Bern , the subjects biology , biochemistry and chemistry with the diploma as a university degree in 1972. In 1975 he acquired at Rudolf Weber at the Zoological Institute of the University of Bern a doctorate in biology. As a postdoctoral fellow , Schibler worked with Robert P. Perry at the Fox Chase Cancer Center in Philadelphia , before he got a position as a researcher at the Swiss Institute for Experimental Cancer Research in Epalinges in 1978 . Since 1984 he has held a professorship in molecular biology at the University of Geneva . He retired at the end of 2015.

In his work on gene expression in the liver , Schibler was able to show that the synthesis of the transcription factor DBP there is subject to a strict daily rhythm. In the following, Schibler mainly dealt with the molecular basis of the circadian rhythm of tissue- specific gene expression in mammals . He examined the influence of the master pacemaker in the suprachiasmatic nucleus to synchronize other clocks in the organism and was able to show that this synchronization is mediated by mechanisms such as food intake, rest and activity, body temperature or hormone release .

Schibler was one of the editors of the following scientific journals, among others : Cell , The EMBO Journal , Biological Chemistry , Journal of Biological Rhythms .

In 1983 Schibler received the Friedrich Miescher Prize of the Swiss Institute for Experimental Cancer Research , in 1986 the Cloëtta Prize (with Walter Schaffner ), in 1996 the Otto Naegeli Prize and in 2000 the Louis Jeantet Prize . He has been a member of the European Molecular Biology Organization (EMBO) since 1988 and of the Academia Europaea since 1990 .

Schibler is married and has two children.
