The Panamanian-Portuguese relations describe the intergovernmental relationship between Panama and Portugal . The countries have had direct diplomatic relations since 1912.

In 2010, 220 Portuguese citizens were registered as consular in Panama, 27 citizens of Panama were registered in Portugal in 2015, 12 of them in the capital Lisbon.

On April 9, 1857, the Republic of New Granada (now Colombia ) and Portugal signed a first trade agreement. In 1903 the USA split off from New Granada and founded the independent state of Panama as a result of the Panama conflict . Portugal did not officially and in any form recognized Panama's independence, but diplomatic contacts are noted.

After since 1912. A first Portuguese Charge d'Affaires in Panama accredited , was opened on 10 July 1913, the Portuguese legation in Panama City. Colombia, Costa Rica and Venezuela should also belong to their district. In 1919, however, the legation was closed again. The Portuguese embassy in Venezuela, which opened in 1926, was henceforth also responsible for Panama.

In 2015, Portugal opened its first full embassy in Panama.

In connection with the documents known as Panama Papers in 2016 , which made public concrete cases of legal and illegal tax avoidance via letterbox companies and other models in Panama, 34 Portuguese participants were also known. However, it did not result in scandals as large as in some cases in other countries. The international research cooperation of the Panama Papers from over 70 countries included the weekly newspaper Expresso from Portugal and the television station TVI .

Portugal maintains its embassy in the Torre Optima office building in the capital Panama City ( Avenida Samuel Lewis , corner of Calle 55 Este ). There is also a Portuguese honorary consulate , also in Panama City, which is subordinate to the consulate general in Portugal's embassy in the Colombian capital Bogotá .

Panama's embassy is located in the Belém district of Lisbon , at 14 Rua Pêro de Alenquer in the municipality of São Francisco Xavier . There are no Panamanian consulates next to the embassy in Portugal.

The Portuguese Chamber of Commerce AICEP is represented in Panama with an office at the Portuguese Embassy.

In 2016, Portugal exported goods worth 22.67 million euros to Panama (2015: 18.37 million; 2014: 15.37 million; 2013: 13.41 million; 2012: 10.50 million) , thereof 49.1% machines and devices, 23.1% metals, 0.4% wood and cork and 0.8% ores and minerals.

In the same period, Panama delivered goods worth 12.16 million euros to Portugal (2015: 7.48 million; 2014: 5.79 million; 2013: 7.09 million; 2012: 3.28 million) , thereof 99.9% agricultural products and 0.1% chemical-pharmaceutical products.

In 2016, Panama ranked 75th as a buyer and 91st as a supplier for Portuguese foreign trade. In Panamanian foreign trade in 2015, Portugal ranked 51st among buyers and 49th among suppliers.

The Panamanian national soccer team and the Portuguese men's selection have played against each other for the time being (as of February 2017). In the friendly match on August 15, 2012 in the Algarve Stadium , the Portuguese won 2-0.
