The bahamaisch-Portuguese relations include intergovernmental relations between the Bahamas and Portugal . They have had direct diplomatic relations since at least 1995.

Relations are good, but weak and determined by bilateral trade. In Portugal, the Bahamas are best known as a Caribbean vacation destination.

There is a mutual visa waiver for up to 90 days.

In 2016 a citizen of the Bahamas was registered in Portugal, in the Lisbon district . In 2009, a person residing in the Bahamas was registered at the Portuguese consulate in Nassau.

history

The islands of today's Bahamas were discovered by Christopher Columbus for Spain in 1492 . According to the Treaty of Tordesillas , the islands fell into the Spanish sphere, so no relations with Portugal were established. The Bahamas was a British colony from 1717 until independence in 1973.

In 1995, accredited with the Portuguese representative in Washington, Francisco José Laço Treichler Knopfli the first ambassador of Portugal in the Bahamas. The countries then did not set up reciprocal embassies, the Bahamas remained part of the administrative district of the Portuguese embassy in the USA .

Portugal does not have its own embassy in the Bahamas, which belongs to the administrative district of the Portuguese embassy in the US capital Washington, DC . Portugal has a consulate in the Bahamian capital Nassau .

The Bahamas also does not have its own embassy in Portugal; its European representation in London is responsible for the country. There are no Bahamian consulates in Portugal.

economy

The Portuguese Chamber of Commerce AICEP does not have a branch in the Bahamas, the AICEP office in New York is responsible for this.

In 2016, Portugal exported goods worth 2.552 million euros to the Bahamas ( 2015 : 3.496 million; 2014 : 73.029 million; 2013 : 0.650 million; 2012 : 0.531 million), 33.2% of which were chemical-pharmaceutical Products (mainly paints and varnishes), 32.2% metal goods (mainly aluminum prefabricated parts), 24.9% textiles (mainly industrial carpets and carpets) and 3.6% machines and devices.

In the same period, the Bahamas exported goods worth 40,000 euros to Portugal ( 2015 : 46,000; 2014 : 23.00; 2013 : 21,000; 2012 : 23,000), of which 81.0% were metal goods (primarily scrap), 11.1% Machines and devices (partly measuring devices, partly scrap goods), 5.2% hides and leather (especially bags) and 2.7% optical and precision devices.

This placed the Bahamas in the 137th place among buyers and 165th among the suppliers for Portuguese foreign trade, while in the Bahamas' foreign trade Portugal ranked 78th as a buyer and 57th as a supplier.

Sports

At the FIFA Beach Soccer World Cup 2017 in the Bahamas Portugal was represented. The Portuguese beach soccer players did not meet the host. The Bahamas were eliminated after the group stage, for Portugal the tournament ended after the quarterfinals.
