history

Cruise ships in the port of Castries : the Caribbean island of St. Lucia is primarily known in Portugal as an exclusive destination and stop for Caribbean cruises

St. Lucia was discovered for Spain by Christopher Columbus around 1500 . According to the Treaty of Tordesillas , the island fell into the Spanish sphere, so that no special relations with the Portuguese colonial empire developed. After that, the island first became French, then British.

The colonial rulers brought increasing numbers of slaves to the island for the plantation economy, which was particularly used to cultivate sugar cane . A not insignificant part of these came from Portuguese possessions along the west coast of Africa, until the abolition of slavery in 1834.

St. Lucia gained independence from Great Britain in 1979. Official contacts with Portugal intensified only a little afterwards.

In the 1990s, the two countries entered into direct diplomatic relations. Augusto Martins Gonçalves Pedro , Portugal's ambassador to Colombia, was the first Portuguese ambassador to double-accredit himself on March 3, 1999 in the Lucian capital of Castries . In doing so, he emphasized the willingness of the Portuguese side to intensify political and economic cooperation despite the limitation of geographical distance. He also underlined that Portugal would continue to support St. Lucia and other ACP countries to maintain preferential treatment with the EU , particularly on the issue of banana imports.
