Michaël Bournival (born May 31, 1992 in Shawinigan , Québec ) is a former Canadian ice hockey player . The left winger played 127 games for the Canadiens de Montréal and the Tampa Bay Lightning in the National Hockey League in his comparatively short professional career .
Career
Michaël Bournival began his career in the city of Trois-Rivières , before joining the Cataractes de Shawinigan in the Ligue de hockey junior majeur du Québec (LHJMQ) in 2008 . In his debut season 2008/09 he established himself as a regular player and played all 21 games in the play-offs before the team failed in the final series at the Voltigeurs de Drummondville . In the following season he was also able to increase his points and scored 62 points scorer in 58 games.
In the 2010 NHL Entry Draft , Bournival was then drafted in the third round at a total of 71st position by the Colorado Avalanche . In November 2010, his NHL rights were given in exchange for defender Ryan O'Byrne to the Canadiens de Montréal . On December 21, 2011, he signed a three-year entry-level contract with the Canadiens.
Before the 2010/11 season, Bournival was named team captain of the Cataractes and then led the team into the play-offs twice in a row, each time among the top four scorers of the team. Although the team failed in the play-offs of the 2011/12 season in the second round, the Cataractes were qualified to host the 2012 Memorial Cup . After two wins in the knockout round, the Cataractes finally defeated the London Knights 2-1 in the final and thus won the first Memorial Cup in their franchise history. Bournival finished the tournament with seven points from six games and also gave the decisive assist to Anton Slobin's winning goal .
For the 2012/13 season he finally moved to the Hamilton Bulldogs , the then farm team of the Canadiens de Montréal, in the American Hockey League and finished the season with 30 points as the team's third-best scorer. For the 2013/14 season Bournival was then for the first time in the NHL squad of the Canadiens and made his debut on October 5, 2013 against the Philadelphia Flyers . Twelve days later he scored his first goal in a win against the Columbus Blue Jackets .
After he was used exclusively for the new Canadiens farm team, the St. John's IceCaps, in the 2015/16 season , his contract was not extended after four years in Montréal. As a result, he joined the Tampa Bay Lightning as a free agent in July 2016 . In the following years he was mainly used in the Syracuse Crunch in the AHL, before he declared his active career over in the summer of 2019.
International
For the first time Bournival represented his home province of Québec at the World U-17 Hockey Challenge 2009 , in which he scored five points in five games. At the U18 World Junior Championship in 2010 , he was then on the ice for the first time for Team Canada . Two years later he was again in the squad of the junior selection and won the bronze medal with the team at the Junior World Championship in 2012 .
