Career
Sergei Plotnikow began his career as a hockey player in the youth department of Amur Khabarovsk , for whose second team he was active in the third-rate Pervaya League from 2005 to 2008 . Subsequently, the attacker made his professional ice hockey debut in the 2008/09 season, when he was used for Amur's farm team Yermak Angarsk in the Vysschaya League , the second Russian division. For the 2009/10 season he returned to Khabarovsk and scored six goals in 43 games in his rookie year in the Continental Hockey League and prepared another six hits.
Plotnikow played another two years for Amur in the KHL and scored another 18 goals and 15 assists before moving to Lokomotive Yaroslavl in May 2012 within the KHL . After three years in Yaroslavl, he signed an entry-level contract with the Pittsburgh Penguins in July 2015 .
In the penguins, Plotnikow could not prevail and was given to the Arizona Coyotes in February 2016 . In return, Matthias Plachta and a success-based seven-round voting right for the NHL Entry Draft 2017 moved to Pittsburgh. Plotnikov ended the season in Arizona and returned to his Russian homeland after just one year in North America, where he signed a two-year contract with SKA Saint Petersburg , which was extended for a further four years in 2018. Only two years later, however, the striker became part of a transfer deal twice in May 2020, so that he ended up at HK Metallurg Magnitogorsk via Amur Khabarovsk .
