Johann Leifsson (born July 31, 1993 ) is an Icelandic ice hockey player who has been under contract with Skautafélag Akureyrar in the Icelandic ice hockey league since 2016 .

Career

Johann Leifsson began his career as a ice hockey player with the record champions Skautafélag Akureyrar , for whom he made his debut in the Icelandic ice hockey league at the age of 16 . After becoming Icelandic champions both in 2010 and 2011 with his team , he moved to North America for a year for the Niagara Fury , which plays in the CJHL junior league. From 2012 to 2015 he was again under contract with Skautafélag Akureyrar, where he was on the ice for both teams ( Vikingar and Jötnar ). With Vikingar he won the Icelandic championship again in 2013, 2014 and 2015. In 2015 he moved to the Motala AIF in Sweden in Division 2 , the fourth highest division in the country, but returned to his home club after just one year.

International

Johann Leifsson played for Iceland as a teenager. He first took part in the U18 World Championships in 2009 , 2010 and 2011 , where he played in Division II in 2010 and in Division III in the other two years. In 2011 he was voted the best player of his team and was also the player of the tournament with the most assists. With the U20 selection of Icelanders, he took part in the 2010 , 2011 , 2012 and 2013 World Championships . He played in Division III in 2010 and 2012 and in Division II in 2011 and 2013.

In parallel to his appearances in the junior teams, Johann Leifsson was already playing in the men's national team . He made his debut at the age of 18 at the 2012 World Cup , when he finished fourth out of six teams in Group A of Division II with the Icelanders at the tournament in Reykjavík. Also in 2013 , 2014 , 2015 , 2016 , 2017 and 2018 he represented his colors in this division. He also played with the Icelanders in qualifying for the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang .

At the U20 World Cup in 2014 , he acted as assistant coach of the Icelandic junior team , which competed in Division II.
