Oliver Oscar Emanuel Ekman Larsson (born July 17, 1991 in Karlskrona ) is a Swedish ice hockey player who has been under contract with the Arizona Coyotes in the National Hockey League since 2010 and has been captain of the team since 2018 . With the Swedish national team , he won the gold medal at the 2017 and 2018 World Championships and the silver medal at the 2014 Winter Olympics .

Career

Oliver Ekman Larsson began his career as a hockey player in the youth division of the Tingsryds AIF , for whose first team he made his debut in the third-rate Division 1 in the 2007/08 season . The defender then moved to Leksands IF , for whom he scored three goals in 39 games in the 2008/09 season and made 14 assists in the HockeyAllsvenskan . Then the left shooter was selected in the first round in the NHL Entry Draft 2009 as the sixth player of the Phoenix Coyotes . Until 2010, however, he stayed with his previous team in the HockeyAllsvenskan before he was appointed to the Coyotes' NHL squad. For the 2011 NHL All-Star Game , he was nominated as one of twelve rookies who took part in the Honda NHL SuperSkills .

In July 2018, Ekman Larsson signed a new eight-year contract in Arizona that is expected to earn him an average annual salary of $ 8.25 million for the 2019-2020 season . A few weeks later he was named fourth team captain of the Phoenix / Arizona franchise, inheriting Shane Doan after the position had been vacant due to his resignation the previous year.

For Sweden Ekman Larsson took part in the U18 World Junior Championship in 2009 , where he finished fifth with his team. He also represented his home country at the 2010 U20 World Junior Championship . With the Swedish selection, Larsson also took part in the Senior World Championships in 2010 and 2011 . At the 2014 Olympics, he won the silver medal with the Swedish national team. At the 2015 World Cup , the team only finished fifth, but Ekman Larsson was the best template provider (10) and was then appointed to the All-Star team. Furthermore, he represented his home country at the World Cup of Hockey 2016 , where he achieved third place with the team before winning the gold medal with the Tre Kronor at the 2017 World Cup . The team achieved the same in the following year , with Ekman Larsson being appointed to the all-star team of the tournament.

His brother Kevin Ekman Larsson is also a professional ice hockey player. His maternal grandfather, Kenneth Ekman , competed in the 1972 Winter Olympics as a hockey player .
