Jay Woodcroft (born August 11, 1976 in Toronto , Ontario ) is a retired Canadian ice hockey player and current coach . During his active career he played in the East Coast Hockey League and the German ice hockey league on the position of the center . From 2008 to 2018 he was assistant coach under Todd McLellan at the San Jose Sharks and Edmonton Oilers before he was introduced as the new head coach of the Bakersfield Condors of the American Hockey League in April 2018 .

Career

Woodcroft began his career late at the age of 20 when he received a four-year scholarship to the University of Alabama-Huntsville . There he played at the same time for the university team in College Hockey America , a league in the game operation of the National Collegiate Athletic Association . In the four years of his membership in the team, the Canadian played 113 games in which he scored 123 points. In addition, he won with the team at the end of the 1997/98 season, the NCAA Championship Division II with two clear victories over Bemidji State University .

After finishing his studies in the spring of 2000, that he graduated summa cum laude in finance , the Jackson Bandits engaged him from the East Coast Hockey League , where he completed his only career game in a professionally organized league. In this game, the trained center player also scored a goal. The following summer Woodcroft joined the Missouri River Otters from the United Hockey League , for which he scored 19 points in 56 games, before moving to the West Coast Hockey League for the Anchorage Aces in the following season 2001/02 . After only 31 completed games for the team, however, he returned to the UHL and ran for the remainder of the 2001/02 season and the entire 2002/03 season for the Flint Generals . In 82 games he posted 44 scorer points for these. In the summer of 2003, the next change took place when he decided to run for the Corpus Christi Rayz in the Central Hockey League . He left this after only a year and moved to Europe , where he went on goal hunting in the German ice hockey league for the Stuttgart Wizards in the 2004/05 season . Although he could not celebrate any great success with the team, he set a personal career record with 49 points in 36 games. After the end of the season, he finally ended his active career.

After his resignation, the Detroit Red Wings signed the then 29-year-old from the National Hockey League in the summer of 2005 as assistant coach to their new head coach, Mike Babcock . Woodcroft limited his work to video analysis and the support of the coaching team. In total, he remained in this position for three years until the summer of 2008 and celebrated winning the Stanley Cup with the team at the end of the 2007/08 season . After his assistant coach colleague Todd McLellan was poached by the San Jose Sharks in June 2008 and promoted to head coach, Woodcroft, along with Todd Richards and Trent Yawney , was hired a little later as one of his assistant coaches. As with the Red Wings, Woodcroft worked mostly as a video analyst for the Northern Californians, but had more say in decision-making than in Detroit.

After the 2014/15 season, he and Todd McLellan were fired and a few weeks later hired by the Edmonton Oilers .

In September 2016, he was the assistant coach of Team North America at the 2016 World Cup of Hockey , a selection of U23 players from Canada and the USA.

After the 2017/18 season, Woodcroft was introduced within the Organization of the Oilers as the new head coach of the farm team, the Bakersfield Condors from the American Hockey League .
