Coordinates: 31 ° 11 ' S , 151 ° 49' O Walcha is a Local Government Area (LGA) in the Australian state of New South Wales . The area is 6,261.0 km² and has about 3,100 inhabitants.
The Walcha Shire is located in the east of the state about 510 km north of the metropolis of Sydney and 530 km southwest of Brisbane . The area comprises 51 hamlets and villages, including Aberbaldie, Bergen op Zoom, Brackendale, Branga Plains, Campfire, The Flags, Glen Morrison, Ingleba, Kangaroo Flat, Moona Plains, Nowendoc, Orundumbie, Riamukka, St. Leonards Creek, Tia, Tuggolo , Walcha , Walcha Road, Winterbourne and Yarrowitch and parts of Niangala and Woolbrook. The council's administrative headquarters are in the town of Walcha in the northwest of the LGA, where around 1,500 people live.

The Walcha Council has eight members who are elected by the residents of the four wards (two each from Wards A, B and C). These three districts are defined independently of the localities. The mayor of the council is also recruited from among the councilors.
