At least ten warships of the British Royal Navy carried or carry the name HMS Vanguard .

  • The first HMS Vanguard was a galleon built in 1586 and scrapped in 1630
  • The second HMS Vanguard was a two-deck, 56-cannon ship of the line that was built in 1631 and sunk as a barrier in the Medway in 1667
  • The third HMS Vanguard was a second class ship of the line with three decks and 90 guns built in 1678 and scrapped in 1703
  • The fourth HMS Vanguard was a third class ship of the line with 70 guns built in 1748 and sold in 1774
  • The fifth HMS Vanguard was a third class ship of the line with 74 guns built in 1787 and scrapped in 1821. It took u. a. participated in the naval battle at Abukir (1798) and temporarily served as Nelson’s flagship
