Hannu Juhani Kamppuri (* 1. July 1957 in Helsinki ) is a retired Finnish ice hockey player , who in his active between 1973 and 1990, including for the New Jersey Devils in the National Hockey League and the Edmonton Oilers in the World Hockey Association has played .

Career

Hannu Kamppuri began his career as a hockey player in his hometown at Karhu-Kissat Helsinki , for whose professional team he made his debut in the SM-sarja in the 1973/74 season . He then moved to its city neighbor Jokerit Helsinki . After one season with his A-Juniors and another as a replacement goal, he was able to quickly assert himself as a regular goalkeeper in Jokerit's professional team. In the 1977/78 season and the 1978/79 season he was elected to the all-star team of the SM-liiga , which in 1975 had replaced the SM-sarja as the highest Finnish division. His good performances did not go undiscovered in North America either and the Finn was signed by the Edmonton Oilers in March 1978 . After the season in Finland was over, he went to Canada and was on the ice in two games for Edmonton in the World Hockey Association by the end of the 1978/79 season . The following year he played mainly for the Houston Apollos , for which he played 19 games in the Central Hockey League . He also played three games for the Baltimore Clippers in the Eastern Hockey League .

In the summer of 1980 Kamppuri returned to his Finnish homeland and was a top performer at Tappara Tampere in the SM-liiga and in the national team in the following four years . With Tappara he was first Finnish runner- up in the 1980/81 season and Finnish champion in the 1981/82 and 1983/84 seasons . For him personally, the period from 1980 to 1984 was very successful. During this time he was elected three more times to the All-Star Team of the SM-liiga (1981, 1983 and 1984), received the SM-liiga Lynces Academici Goalie Award in each of the four years and received the Urpo-Ylönen- three times Trophy for the best goalkeeper in the SM-liiga (1981, 1982 and 1984). He then got the opportunity to move to North America again and received a contract with the New Jersey Devils from the National Hockey League for the 1984/85 season . For the defensively weak team, he stood in 13 games between the posts, of which he lost eleven with an average of 5.02 goals per game. In the further course of the season he was also used for the Maine Mariners in the American Hockey League and the Fort Wayne Komets in the International Hockey League .

After a disappointing year across the Atlantic, Kammpuri returned to Finland one more time. There he received a contract with SaiPa Lappeenranta for the 1985/86 season . There he was able to build on his old form and was called back to the national team for the first time in three years. From 1986 to 1988 he was in goal at Kärpät Oulu and was particularly convincing in the 1986/87 season , when he surprisingly led his team into the playoff final. He himself received the SM-liiga Lynces Academici Goalie Award, the Urpo-Ylönen Trophy and was appointed to the All-Star Team. Most recently he played for two years for the SM-liiga participant KooKoo . In the 1988/89 season he received the SM-liiga Lynces Academici Goalie Award for the last time. He was also named Player of the Year by Ilta-Sanomat magazine . Following the 1989/90 season , he ended his career at the age of 33. In 1998 he was honored as the 115th player to be inducted into the Finnish Hockey Hall of Fame.

International

For Finland , Kamppuri took part in the junior division only in the 1977 Junior World Championship . In the senior sector, he was in his country's squad at the 1981 , 1982 , 1983 , 1986 and 1987 World Championships . In total, he played 25 games at A World Championships.
