The Silvan Reservoir is a reservoir in the south of the Australian state of Victoria and is located about 40 km east of Melbourne near Silvan on the east side of the Dandenongs .
The history of the reservoir goes back to 1914. Back then, a drought forced Melbourne residents to look for another way to store drinking water to meet the ever-increasing demand for water. The reservoir was then built from 1926 to 1931. When the lake was filled, it was 644 m long, 219 m wide and 43 m deep.
The Silvan Reservoir was officially opened on July 7, 1931. In 1983 an overhaul was necessary because the dam wall showed cracks. At the same time, the Silvan Reservoir Park was expanded to include a picnic area.
The reservoir receives most of its water inflow from other reservoirs, because its catchment area is very small at only 9 km². The water for the Silvan Reservoir comes from the Upper Yarra Reservoir , the O'Shannassy Reservoir, and the Thomson Dam (via the Upper Yarra Reservoir). The Silvan Reservoir in turn supplies only the eastern districts of Melbourne directly, but also other reservoirs such as the Cardinia Reservoir and the Greenvale Reservoir .
The Silvan Reservoir has a capacity of 40 million m³.
