The Cardinia Reservoir is a reservoir in the south of the Australian state of Victoria and is located near Emerald , about 45 km southeast of Melbourne . Construction of the 287 million m³ reservoir began in May 1970 and was completed in 1973. The construction of the reservoir cost more than AU $ 11.4 million.

history

In the 1960s it became apparent that Melbourne's water supply was inadequate and another reservoir was needed. The Cardinia Creek flows from the Dandenongs to the southwest to Emerald and then through small hills in front of the city to the south to the Western Port . These small but sharply demarcated hills were chosen as the location for the new reservoir. With the construction of a large barrier structure and a few smaller dams in the hills, the large reservoir was finished.

Construction was completed in 1973, but it took another four years before the lake was completely filled. In addition to the Cardinia Creek, the Silvan Reservoir supplies a large part of the water. The area around the reservoir was transformed into a recreational park with picnic areas, playgrounds, parking lots and hiking trails for AU $ 1 million.

timeline

Some important events in the history of the Cardinia Reservoir were:

  • 1966: The plans to build the Cardinia Reservoir and Thomson Reservoir were approved by the Government of Victoria. Construction of the Tarago Reservoir began in 1966 and was completed in 1969. This reservoir was built by the State Rivers and Water Supply Commission (SR & WSC) to adapt the water supply to the county's increasing needs.
  • 1967: Melbourne suffered a major drought and water rationing took place in the summer of 1967/1968. As a result, the plans for the Cardinia and Thomson reservoirs continued.
  • 1973: Construction of the Cardinia Reservoir by the Melbourne and Metropolitan Board of Works (MMBW) was completed. As part of the Victorian government's program to fluorinate drinking water, construction of fluorination plants began.
  • 1981: Increasing demand for water on the Mornington Peninsula led to renewed overloading of the area's water supply. Despite the improvement in the local water supply, water first had to be diverted from the MBW reservoir Cardinia.
  • 1993: The export of "Australia Pure" table water from the Cardinia Reservoir to Europe and the USA began.

business

The Cardinia Reservoir is fed with water from the Silvan Reservoir via a pipeline. A 3.5 MW power plant at the outlet of this pipeline provides electricity as soon as water is introduced into the Cardinia Reservoir. The drinking water from the reservoir supplies the southern and southeastern districts of Melbourne and the Mornington Peninsula.

The reservoir is operated by Melbourne Water .
