The Dandenongs (English: Dandenong Ranges ), originally known as Corhanwarrabul , are a series of flat mountains that reach their highest point in Mount Dandenong at 633 meters. They are located approximately 35 kilometers east of central Melbourne in southeast Australia . There you will find mainly steep valleys and gorges, covered with temperate rainforest made up of mostly tall eucalyptus and dense undergrowth.

Geography and landscape

Eucalyptus , tree ferns and undergrowth on Mount Dandenong

The Dandenong Ranges are essentially divided into three sections:

  • The Ferntree Gully , a hiking and recreation area with picnic areas for the people of Melbourne, is made of natural bushland and large tree ferns . It was declared a nature park in 1882. One of the most popular hiking trails is the 1000 Steps Walk , a stairway of less than 1000 steps up through the Fern Gorge to the One Tree Hill Picnic Ground . In fact, there used to be only one tree here, and the hill was a popular lookout point. But the vegetation has grown back again; the Lookout Tower was dismantled in 1995.
  • The main attraction of the Sherbrooke Rainforest is the giant eucalyptus with mighty trunks, surrounded by thick scrub and creepers. The Sherbrooke Falls on the eponymous Sherbrooke Creek only reach the volume of a real waterfall falling over the rocks after heavy rainfall. The forests were severely decimated in the 19th century by logging, but the remaining areas have been protected since 1958.
  • Doongalla is another hiking area with viewpoints.

These areas were combined in 1987 to form the Dandenong Ranges National Park , to which the Olinda State Forest and Mount Evelyn were added in 1997 .

Mount Dandenong is a popular destination with a restaurant and an English garden. On a clear day, the skyline of Melbourne can be clearly seen from the panoramic terrace and the view even extends as far as the foothills of the Great Dividing Range .

Flora and fauna

Five forms of vegetation with over 400 endemic plant species are documented in the national park:

130 species of birds, 31 species of mammals, 21 reptiles and 9 species of amphibians are documented in the park.

In the bird world are Gelbhaubenkakadu , Pennant parakeet , Kookaburra , Eastern Yellow Robin and Pied Currawong frequently. Lyre tails are a rarer attraction.

"Puffing Billy"

A tourist magnet is the steam-powered narrow - gauge railway Puffing Billy , which opened in 1900 and travels over 15 miles from Belgrave to Gembrook through the gorges and rainforest in two hours .

Settlements in the Dandenongs

About 72,500 people live in the Dandenong Ranges; If you add the peripheral areas in the east and west of the range of hills, approx. 120,000 inhabitants are reached. The largest localities in the core region (over 5,000 inhabitants) are
