The name Hötorget is known from the 1740s. To the south of the square was a horse dressage facility and workshops were built in the vicinity in which sculptures were cast. One of the sculptors who worked here was Johan Tobias Sergel , and today there is a statue he created on the site of his studio.

The square itself was a market place for a long time , but in 1856 the trade in logs, hay and straw was relocated to the nearby Norrmalmstorg . The Hötorgshallen market hall was built between 1880 and 1884 . In 1914, the trade in fresh meat from larger animals such as beef, pork and sheep was banned entirely, and a little later the trade in smaller cattle and other foodstuffs was also discontinued. From now on, these products were offered in the new wholesale market hall ( Centralsaluhallen ) near today's main train station. The trade in vegetables, flowers, other garden products and clothing accessories has remained to this day.

The development with stalls and workshops from the 18th and 19th centuries existed until around 1920. In 1916, the PUB department store was built by the entrepreneur Paul Urban Bergström . The concert hall was built between 1923 and 1926 under the architect Ivar Tengbom . The building is one of the most important examples of Swedish neoclassicism of the time. In front of the concert hall there is a group of sculptures by the sculptor Carl Milles .

The major redesign of Stockholm City in the 1950s and 1960s gave the southern part of the square a completely new look, while the other parts have kept their appearance practically unchanged.
