Ivar Justus Tengbom (born April 7, 1878 at Gränna , † August 6, 1968 in Stockholm ) was a Swedish architect , one of his most famous works is the Stockholm Concert Hall .

education

Ivar Tengbom studied at Chalmers University of Technology in Gothenburg and at the Kungliga Konsthögskolan in Stockholm. Study trips to Denmark (1903) and France (1905/06) followed. In 1906 he founded his own office and by 1915 he had 25 employees.

life and work

After a few church projects ( Engelbrektskyrkan 1906, Högalidskyrkan 1911, both in Stockholm), the big breakthrough came in 1920 when he won the competition for the Stockholm Concert Hall, Stockholms Konserthus . The building, which was built from 1924 to 1926, was a total manifestation of the Swedish classicism of the 1920s, also known as Swedish grace .

In the years that followed, Tengbom switched to the modern style , just like his famous colleague Gunnar Asplund . The two office buildings in Stockholm, for the Esselte publishing house (1928–1934) and the “Citypalast” for Bank Sydbanken on Norrmalmstorg (1930–1932) are clear representatives of this style, which Sweden calls functionalism.

One of his last great works is the office building for the Bonnier publishing house in Stockholm, for which he won first prize in a competition in 1937. The building was only realized after the Second World War , together with their son Anders Tengbom.

The son Anders Tengbom continued the architectural legacy of Ivar Tenbom and the grandson Svante Tengbom is the third generation to run the company. This makes Tengbom Arkitekter one of the oldest still active architecture firms in the world.
