Anders Tengbom (born November 10, 1911 in Stockholm ; † August 6, 2009 ) was a Swedish architect , son of the architect Ivar Tengbom .

education

Anders Tengbom received his education from 1930–1934 at the Technical University of Stockholm , after which he went on study trips to the USA , Japan and China . In the USA he studied for two semesters under Eliel Saarinen at the Cranbrook Academy of Art , where he also met the legendary Swedish sculptor Carl Milles , who taught sculpture at the academy. In 1936 he joined his father, Ivar Tengbom's architectural office.

Work and life

One of his first major commissions was the new high-rise office building for Bonnier- Verlag, which he carried out with his father in 1946. During the renovation of Norrmalm in the 1950s, he was the architect responsible for one of the five city skyscrapers in Stockholm. Between 1950 and 1970 numerous buildings were built according to his designs, including the conference and training center for the Swedish employers' organization (SAF) on Lidingö , Skogshem (1958) and Wijk (1969), the main office for the daily newspaper Svenska Dagbladet in Stockholm (1961) , the main office for the insurance company Trygg-Hansa in Stockholm (1976), the Swedish embassy in Moscow , as well as hospitals, office and industrial buildings at home and abroad.

From 1950 to 1970 he headed the Tengbom Arkitekter office , after which his son Svante Tengbom took over the management. The office started in 1906 and has been operating without interruption since then, making it one of the oldest still active architectural offices in the world.
