Fredrik Blom (born January 24, 1781 , † September 25, 1853 ) was a Swedish colonel , architect and general manager.

Life

In the late 18th century, Fredrik Blom began his training as a marine sculptor in Karlskrona , which he later continued at the Art Academy in Stockholm . His mentor was Admiral Carl August Ehrensvärd , who was currently working as a training manager for the Swedish Navy in Karlskrona. When Sweden was at war with Russia between 1808 and 1809 , Blom did not come into contact with direct acts of war despite his high position as an officer . However, he was on the staff of Kurt von Stedingk , who negotiated with Russia after the defeat. Through this position Blom came to St. Petersburg and the court of the Tsar , which made a strong impression on him. Blom's breakthrough came in 1817 when he became a professor of architecture at the Stockholm Art Academy. He developed into one of the outstanding military architects of his time. The construction of defenses represented the main part of the state construction activity in the early 19th century. Blom took over the post of head of the building department in the Stockholm Fleet Regiment and carried the title of Lieutenant Colonel Mechanic . Blom is considered the most important representative of the Swedish Empire style and was active throughout the country.

In 1827 he moved into a villa in the Stockholm district of Djurgården .

In Sweden's capital, the buildings on the island of Skeppsholmen are characterized by Blom's activity. He was responsible for the Skeppsholmskirche , which was started in 1824. He also created the fort, the barracks which, after extensive renovation in the 1950s, now houses the art college, the former parade house, which is now the architecture museum, and directed the renovation of the Admiralty House, which is now owned by the Swedish Youth Hostel Association . Other buildings in Stockholm are Karl XIV. John's summer palace ( Rosendals slott ) in Djurgården and several houses on the site of the former Royal Agricultural Academy in Frescati , which is now the university campus. Received is z. B. the main building of the academy ( Bloms hus ), which has housed the university management since 1976.

Blom was best known among his contemporaries for his idea of ​​prefabricated houses. The walls consisted of two boards with airtight cardboard in between. Walls, roof and floor were transported in parts that could easily be put together. The houses were available in various dimensions with movable tiled stoves and spiral stairs and were exported to Russia and France, among others.

Under Blom's other works, the Karl-John's Church find Gothenburg , the Admiralty Church in Karlskrona , the Northern Cemetery in Lund and a variety of buildings for military purposes.

In the years after Blom's death, his architecture was seen as dry and unimaginative, but his technical solutions and precise knowledge of unusual work processes meant a lot for the further development of urban architecture.

The Blomschen houses

A variant of his movable houses, which represented smaller pavilions, were given Blom's name. King Karl XIV. Johann had a preference for this type of building and had several of them built on his property. Based on this model, Blom's pleasure houses also became fashionable among other high-ranking people.
