Svenska Turistföreningen
Svenska Turistföreningen ( STF ) is a Swedish hiking club based in Stockholm .
The association was founded on February 27, 1885 by a group of geology students from Uppsala to promote outdoor life, to develop the natural landscapes and mountain regions of Lapland for tourism and to increase the population's knowledge of their own country. The association's motto is: Känn ditt land , in German: Get to know your country .
STF therefore created hiking trails ( Kungsleden ) and created huts and fjällstationer (mountain stations) in the unpopulated areas where hikers can stay overnight and take care of themselves. The fjällstationer in particular have developed into tourist centers from which day trips or larger tours can be started. In his yearbooks, landscapes or specific subjects from the cultural history, the history of tourism or the nature of the country are presented. STF also publishes a regular magazine, “turist”, which contains articles on Swedish natural landscapes, leisure activities and culture. The STF is a member of the International Youth Hostel Association . He runs youth hostels ( Swedish : vandrarhem ) in numerous Swedish cities. The mountain and hiking huts offer simple accommodation and are comparable to Alpine Club huts in the Alps .
The STF is divided into 82 regional and local district associations. He has around 260 permanent employees, as well as 400 seasonal employees in the summer and winter high season. Furthermore, many youth hostel operators work independently. The STF had around 293,000 members in 2009 and had a turnover of around SEK 217 million (approx. € 24 million).
