The founding meeting of the International Association for Youth Hostels took place in Amsterdam from October 20-22, 1932, with the participation of eleven European countries: Germany , Switzerland , Czechoslovakia , Poland , the Netherlands , Norway , Denmark , Great Britain , Ireland , France and Belgium .

At the second international youth hostel conference in Bad Godesberg in October 1933 , Richard Schirrmann , who founded the youth hostel movement in Germany in 1909, was elected its first president. But in 1936 he was forced by the National Socialists to give up the post.

In 2006, the International Youth Hostel Federation (IYHF) adopted the brand name Hostelling International (HI) . HI is a non-profit organization in the UK. With over 4 million members, the association is one of the largest youth organizations in the world.

The purpose is to provide services for travelers and to coordinate the national associations. The seat is today in Welwyn Garden City near London .
