List of queens of Sweden
The Queen of Sweden ( Swedish Sveriges drottning ) refers to either the wife of a Swedish king or the queen (regent), who is herself head of state of Sweden, in Swedish constitutional law and court protocol since the Middle Ages .
Succession to the throne
Until January 1, 1980, male succession was in force in Swedish succession law . Female descendants only came into play when there was no male heir to the throne. In Swedish history there have only been three queens who were also regents. It was only with the change in the Successionsordning issued in 1810 in 1979 that the priority of male succession was given up. The previous agnatic succession to the throne was given up in favor of equal primogeniture . Crown Princess Victoria of Sweden is therefore currently at the top of the Swedish line of succession.
tasks
The tasks of the queen as the king's wife were purely ceremonial and not regulated by constitutional law. Since the Reformation , however, the queen, like all members of the royal family, had to be "of pure evangelical faith". Their position at court depended heavily on their personality. With the death of her husband, the widowed queen usually kept her title. It mostly remained part of the court protocol and continued to perform ceremonial tasks.
etymology
The term drottning for queen only exists in the Scandinavian languages . It is the feminine form of drott ( old Swedish drott , Icelandic dróttinn , old high German truhtin ), which was used in Scandinavia to designate a prince or small king who was obliged to serve in the army . This term passed down in the male form Drost until the late Middle Ages as a term for a high official. It was not finally abolished in Sweden until 1809.
