Gunilla Bielke

Gunilla Bielke (born June 25, 1568 in Liljesta , Östergötland , † July 19, 1597 at Bråborg Castle in Östergötland) was Queen of Sweden from 1585 to 1592 .

Early years

Gunilla was born as Gunilla Johansdotter. She called herself Gunnel in contemporary sources. She belonged to the aristocratic Swedish family Bielke af Åkerö . Gunilla lost her two parents Johan Axelsson (Bielke) († 1576) and Margareta Axelsdotter (Posse) at an early age.

queen

Gunilla then grew up at the royal court. When King John III. After the death of his first wife Katharina Jagiellonica († 1583) looked for a new wife, his choice fell on the beautiful, blonde 16-year-old Gunilla. Especially the king's brother, who later became King Charles IX. tried to prevent the wedding. Instead, he wanted to connect Johann with a royal family abroad. Gunilla was already engaged to the young nobleman Per Jonsson (Liljesparre) and refused to break her promise, but finally gave in to the recruitment of the considerably older Johann under pressure from her relatives. The wedding of the two took place in February 1585 in Västerås Castle. Karl did not take part in it.

Gunilla was a strong personality. As queen, she was a staunch supporter of Protestantism . Not least because of her influence, the politics of her husband, who actually harbored sympathy for Catholicism , remained committed to the Lutheran faith.

widow

After the death of Johann III. In 1592 Gunilla retired to Bråborg Castle in Östergötland , where her only son Johann (1589–1618) was a duke.
