The ruins of the Royal Castle of Bråborg are located in the Swedish municipality of Norrköping on the shores of Bråviken Bay.

The approximately 250 × 190 meter area of the castle ruin includes the actual 32 × 30 meter ruin with partially preserved cellar, some protective ditches, road embankments and the foundation walls of the chapel. The 10 to 15 meter wide moats are together around 400 meters long and partly muddy or overgrown. The chapel (to be seen on the far right on the engraving) had a cruciform floor plan. There are also remains of the palace garden, which was laid out in the Renaissance style. In the house of the wine merchant Tesdorph on the old market in Norrköping , the coat of arms of King John III. and his wife Gunilla Bielke walled over the portal, which used to be in the castle.

history

Queen Gunilla Bielke had the castle built between 1588 and 1590, where she lived after the death of her husband and died in 1597. After that, Bråborg belonged to Gunilla's son, Duke John of Östergötland , who lived here with his wife and cousin, Maria Elisabet, until they both died in 1618. The organization of the funeral ceremonies by Gustav II Adolf turned out to be curious. First the ceremony had to be postponed because there was a lack of black clothing and wax for candles and torches, and then the king broke into the ice of Bråviken with his sleigh, so that he had to be frightened out. Finally, on January 19, 1619, the funeral procession was able to move towards Linköping , where the funeral took place one day later in the cathedral .

Since Duke Johann's marriage was childless, the castle later became the property of Count Johan Kasimir and Adolf Johan from the Pfalz-Zweibrücken family , and Karl X. Gustav also owned it for a short time. In 1669 a major fire damaged the castle, which was finally destroyed by Russian troops in 1719.
