Norrköping is a municipality ( Swedish kommun ) in the Swedish province of Östergötland County and the historical provinces of Östergötland and Södermanland . The main town of the municipality is Norrköping .

history

The area that is now Norrköping Municipality was covered by ice during the Ice Age . The place where Norrköping is today was then covered by water. Little by little, the first people arrived in the area. So there are z. B. Finds of simple axes in Smedby and Borgsmon . In addition, rock carvings from the Bronze Age have been found on both sides of the Motala stöm near Himmelstalund , as well as some living places from the Stone Age on the beaches.

The rock carvings found represent motifs from everyday life, e.g. B. Ships , animals of all kinds, people, sun symbols and weapons . At that time the water surface was approx. 15 meters higher, so that the scratches were almost at the level of the bank line of the Motala Current. There are many testimonies from the Iron Age , e.g. B. grave fields , stone setting and ancient castles. A burial ground with 500 graves was discovered near Fiskeby . These indicate that people were buried here from the Bronze Age to the age of the Vikings .

The battle of Bråvalla is said to have taken place in the eighth century on the plain north of Norrköping. It is described in several Nordic stories, but there is still no proof whether it took place at all. It is also not yet certain where exactly it should have taken place. In the battle Sigurd Ring , King of Svealand and Västergötland , and Harald Hildenand , King of Denmark and Östergötland faced each other. Sigurd Ring was appointed vassal king by Harald Hildenand and emerged victorious from the battle, which meant Svealand's independence.

On July 3, 1866 , the railway line to Katrineholm and Stockholm was inaugurated. In addition to Norrköping, the trains also stopped in Kimstad, Eksund, Åby, Fiskeby and Graversfors. In 1915 the railway line to Nyköping and Järna was completed and inaugurated. Other newly built stations included a. Åby, Getå and Krokek.
