context

The varied rock carvings ( petroglyphs ) in Östergötland show a concentration on the Motala stream in Norrköping and show moose , deer, horses and wild boar as motifs . Pictures of ships appear in large numbers and symbols such as the soles of the feet , concentric circles, wheels, spirals and network-like images typical of Östergötland are represented. Hatchets and swords, which play a role in the discussion of the age of the Nordic rock carvings, are also characteristic. Human figures are sometimes found in a processional arrangement. Many rock carvings are naturalistic and are reminiscent of Norrland carvings and paintings. The most important sites are near Ekenberg, Himmelstalund and Leonardsberg.

The scratches

With approximately 50 larger and smaller, just lying Hällristningar - plates to the field of Himmelstalund is one of the interessantesten areas in Scandinavia. Noticeable are:

  • a double circle from which twelve horn-like arcs emerge.
  • a wild boar hunt in which two men with long spears and two dogs - one of them obviously killed - attack a mighty boar.
  • Ships with indicated painting of the side walls. Some of the ships shown have wide, projecting double stems that resemble the Hjortspringboot .
  • some ships from Himmelstalund indicate crews of over 50 people.
  • compared to the other drawings, a large rectangle full of curved lines. The size alone indicates something special and represents the hierarchy of an abstract thought.
