Linköping is a municipality ( Swedish kommun ) in the Swedish province of Östergötland County and the historic province of Östergötland . The main town of the municipality is Linköping .

With a population of over 160,000 (2019), Linköping municipality is one of the ten largest cities in Sweden by population.

geography

The municipality of Linköping is centrally located within the province of Östergötland County . Neighboring municipalities are, from north to west, Finspång , Norrköping , Söderköping , Åtvidaberg , Kinda , Ydre , Boxholm , Mjölby and Motala .

The largest lake in the municipality is the Roxen , which is located north of the city of Linköping.

economy

In 2003 Linköping's population grew more than any other Swedish municipality, and Linköping is still one of the fastest growing municipalities today. The reason is good employment growth and low unemployment .

In 1937, Saab relocated its aircraft production to Linköping. The telecommunications company Ericsson also has a plant here.

After the local elections on September 9, 2018, a coalition of Moderata samlingspartiet , Centerpartiet , Liberalerna and Kristdemokraterna was formed. With 39 votes, it has one vote less than the opposition, which is led by the Social Democrats . The term of office of the municipal council began on January 1, 2019.

Linköping is one of the few Swedish municipalities that calls the municipality spokesman "Mayor". Lars Vikinge (Centerpartiet) currently holds this position.

Attractions

Ekenäs Castle

The most important attraction of the municipality is the medieval Linköping Cathedral , near which there is a castle and the town hall. Ekenäs Castle is by Lake Teden . The Vreta monastery has been preserved as a ruin, while the associated medieval church has been completely preserved. About 18 km south of the city of Linköping is the bjärka-säby castle at the outflow of Stångån from Stora ranks . The Flygvapenmuseum , an aviation museum dedicated primarily to the Swedish Air Force, is located near the town of Malmslätt at the Malmen airfield .
