Christine von Holstein-Gottorp (born April 12 or 13, 1573 in Kiel ; † December 8, 1625 at Gripsholm Castle ) was the second wife of the Swedish King Karl IX. and Queen of Sweden from 1604 to 1611.

Life

Christine von Holstein-Gottorp and her husband King Karl IX. of Sweden

Christine was the daughter of Duke Adolf von Schleswig-Holstein-Gottorp (1526–1586) and his wife Christine von Hessen (1543–1604). It was supposed to be the Polish King Sigismund III. Marry Wasa (1566–1632) who, however, broke the promise. Christine, who never overcame this pain, then became the second wife of the future King of Sweden, Charles IX. (1550-1611). The wedding took place on August 22, 1592 in Nyköping Castle. On March 15, 1607, she and her husband were solemnly crowned in Uppsala Cathedral.

Christine is described as a blonde and tall woman. She was economical with the budget of the court. She proved to be assertive towards her children. For reasons of class, she successfully turned against the love affair between her son Gustav Adolf and Ebba Brahe and prevented her youngest child, Carl Philip, from becoming King of Russia in 1612/13.

After the death of her husband (1611) and the loss of her beloved son Karl Philip (1622), she lived in seclusion with the family. Christine von Holstein-Gottorp is buried next to her husband in Strängnäs Cathedral in Södermanland .
