Karl Filip (also Carl Philip ) of Sweden (born April 22, 1601 in Tallinn Castle ; † January 25, 1622 in Narva ) was a Swedish prince from the Wasa family .

Life

Karl Filip was born as the son of the later Swedish King Karl IX. and his second wife Christine von Holstein-Gottorp was born. He was the younger brother of the future King of Sweden Gustav II Adolf . After the death of his father in 1611, Karl Filip took over the title of Duke of Södermanland , Närke and Värmland with the center of Nyköping .

Sweden was heavily involved in the Russian civil war during Karl Filip's lifetime . The main aim of Swedish politics was to consolidate the Swedish possessions in the Baltic States . In particular, the beginning of the Ingermanland War (1610-1617) and Jakob de la Gardie's storming of Novgorod brought Sweden significant military successes.

Karl Filip then advanced to become a contender for the Russian throne. In 1611 a Russian embassy reached Stockholm with a corresponding offer . The city of Novgorod , which from now on was under Swedish protection, had launched Karl Filip as a candidate. During the turn of the year 1612/13 the election of a new ruler took place in Moscow under chaotic circumstances. Michael Romanow prevailed against Karl Filip in the Imperial Assembly in February 1613 . The Romanov dynasty ruled Russia until 1917. Karl Filip's mother was also against her son's candidacy because Karl Filip seemed too young to her.

On March 5, 1620, Karl Filip secretly married Elisabet Ribbing (1596–1662). Their daughter, Elisabet Carlsdotter (1622–1682), was born after their father's death.

In 1621 Karl Filip accompanied his brother Gustav II Adolf (Swedish ruler since 1611) on his campaign in the Baltic States. In the summer of 1621 the Swedish army besieged the Livonian city of Riga , which surrendered in September. Shortly afterwards, Karl Filip fell seriously ill and withdrew to Narva. He died there in January 1622.

The town of Filipstad in Värmland, founded in 1611, is named after Karl Filip.
