Sofia Eriksdotter of Denmark († 1286 in Denmark) was the Swedish queen.

Life

Her parents were King Erik IV Plovpenning (1216–1250) of Denmark and his wife Queen Jutta (approx. 1223–1267).

After the death of their father, she and her sister Ingeborg had inherited a large inheritance. In 1260 she married the son of Birger Jarl , the Swedish King Waldemar Birgersson . She was crowned in Jönköping in 1260 . The marriage wasn't happy. Waldemar turned to her sister Jutta, who had a child from him. Sofia is described as an intelligent, quick-witted, even sharp-tongued and spirited woman who was passionate about playing chess. In 1277 she returned to Denmark.

A short time later Waldemar was deposed and his brother Magnus Ladelås took over the rule. Until her death in 1286 she carried the title "fordums de Sveers Dronning" (former Queen of Sweden). Her son Erik Waldemarson († 1302) came to Denmark in 1327 and claimed his mother's inheritance.

Six children resulted from his marriage to Waldemar:
