James Hamilton, 5th Duke of Hamilton
James Hamilton, 5th Duke of Hamilton ( January 5, 1702 , † March 9, 1742 in Bath ), was a Scottish nobleman.
James was a son of James Hamilton, 4th Duke of Hamilton and his wife Elizabeth Gerard. With the death of his father in 1712, he was ten years old Duke of Hamilton.
The Duke was at Winchester College trained and graduated from the Christ Church College of Oxford University in 1719 as a Doctor of Civil Laws from. In 1724 he became Captain General of the Royal Company of Archers and was accepted as a knight in the Thistle Order . Hamilton was considered disloyal and wavered between the parties of the king and the Jacobites . From 1727 to 1733 he held the court office of the first Lord of the Bedchamber . In 1736 he was accepted as a fellow in the Royal Society .
He suffered from jaundice and died of a stroke at the age of 40 .
Hamilton was married three times, his first marriage in 1723 to Anne, daughter of John Campbell Cochrane, 4th Earl of Dundonald, but who died shortly after the birth of her son. This was:
- James Hamilton, 6th Duke of Hamilton (1724-1758).
His second wife was Elizabeth († 1729), daughter of Thomas Strangeways since 1727 and in third marriage he married Anne († 1771), daughter of Edward Spencer, with whom he had the following children:
- Anne Hamilton (1738–1780), ⚭ 1761 Arthur Chichester, 1st Marquess of Donegall ;
- Archibald Hamilton, 9th Duke of Hamilton (1740-1819);
- Spencer Hamilton (1742-1791).
