Life

Birkmeyer comes from a family of dancers. After training at the Vienna State Opera Ballet School , which began at the age of ten , he was later a dancer and principal dancer and later head of the Vienna State Opera Ballet School.

He appeared as the protagonist of the ballets Josephs Legende , Coppelia , Scheherazade , Carneval and Der Taugenasst .

Birkmeyer was excluded from the Reichstheaterkammer in 1939 , which amounted to a professional ban. His objection was granted on condition that he parted ways with his Jewish wife Jolanthe. Since he did not intend to implement this, he planned to emigrate with her. Both were sentenced to prison in 1940/41 for listening to foreign radio stations. Toni Birkmeyer's was 18 months, his wife's was three years; she did not survive imprisonment.
