Charlie Harper (* 25. May 1944 in London as David Charles Perez ) is an English musician, songwriter, producer and singer of the punk band UK Subs .

Life

When UK Subs was founded in 1976, Harper, 32, was already a veteran of London's rhythm and blues scene. However, it was only now at the zenith of the punk movement with UK Subs that he made his breakthrough as a professional musician, and he was able to give up his work in a hairdressing salon. Just before UK Subs was founded, he was a founding member and front man of The Marauders . After getting excited about a performance by The Damned at the Roxy Club , Harper formed the punk band UK Subs. But even later he experimented with other genres with his band and as a solo artist , such as New Wave and Metal .

Charlie Harper began his solo career around 1980, in parallel with his ongoing work with UK Subs. Between 1980 and 1983 he released two singles and a studio album.

In 1983 Harper founded the band Urban Dogs with Ian Knox Carnochan from The Vibrators , which among other things brought out the album of the same name. Until 1986, in addition to his involvement with UK Subs, Harper was also active with Urban Dogs. The project was then suspended, but was reactivated several times by him and Knox in the 1990s, but only for isolated appearances and recordings.

In 1991 Harper worked as a guest musician in the production of Learning English Lesson One , a studio album by the German rock band Die Toten Hosen in collaboration with artists whose pieces were reenacted on the album.

At UK Subs, Harper also plays the harmonica in addition to the vocals , writes and composes the songs and occasionally plays guitar or bass. He also works as a producer.

Charlie Harper is one of the longest-serving active punk musicians and one of the rock musicians with the most stage appearances. For decades he had up to 200 live performances a year and on his extensive tours with UK Subs also regularly to numerous German cities. It now occurs much less often.
