Knox (* 4. September 1945 in London as Ian Milroy Carnochan ) is an English musician, songwriter, singer and founding member of the punk band The Vibrators .

Life

Knox grew up in Cricklewood , north London, and Watford . There he played guitar in school bands and temporarily gave up when he attended the art academy in Watford and devoted himself to painting. In 1974 he started making music again and in February 1976 he founded The Vibrators, one of the first punk bands.

In 1978, The Vibrators was characterized by constant line-up changes and tendencies towards dissolution, in the course of which Knox left and started his solo career at the end of the year. Between 1980 and 1983 he released two singles and a studio album. As early as 1982, The Vibrators reunited with the original line-up with Knox as singer and guitarist. Since then, Knox has been with the band on some extensive European and US tours. In 2010 they made 130 appearances before Knox parted ways with The Vibrators again in 2011.

In 1983 Knox founded the band Urban Dogs together with singer Charlie Harper and bassist Alvin Gibbs (both from UK Subs ) as well as drummer Matthew Best (later with Psychic TV ) , which brought out the album of the same name, among other things. Until 1986, Knox was active with Urban Dogs in addition to his engagement in other bands . Then the project was suspended, but was reactivated several times in the 1990s by him and Harper for isolated appearances and recordings.

1984 was formed Knox and some former members of Hanoi Rocks with Fallen Angels another band, with whom he released three albums in the next four years.

In 1991 Knox worked as a guest musician in the production of Learning English Lesson One , a studio album by the German rock band Die Toten Hosen in collaboration with artists whose pieces were reenacted on the album.

In addition to music, Knox is also artistically active as a painter and writer. His painting is influenced by both classical and contemporary artists. He cites Salvador Dali and Andy Warhol as role models . Knox portrayed numerous punk musicians, such as Joe Strummer , Joey Ramone and Sid Vicious . As a man of letters, in addition to his work as a songwriter or lyricist for various bands and musicians, he mainly works as a science fiction author. He cites the works of Ray Bradbury , Larry Niven , Isaac Asimov and Stephen King as sources of inspiration for his work in this area .
