Alberto Blanc

Alberto Blanc (born November 10, 1835 in Chambéry , † May 31, 1904 in Turin ) was an Italian diplomat .

Since the larger and more important part of his service time was after the elevation to the nobility , he often appears in literature as Alberto de Blanc .

Life

Alberto Blanc was the son of Mariette Cartannas and Louis François Blanc. At the time of the cession of Savoy to France, he chose Italian citizenship. Alberto Blanc attended the Cavour School, studied law at the University of Turin and obtained a doctorate in law . As a student he wrote for the Revue des Deux Mondes and the Journal des Débats in Paris. In the series Memoirs Diplomatiques he published a study of the correspondence of the mission of Joseph de Maistre in Saint Petersburg in 1802 . On February 2, 1860, Camillo Benso von Cavour sent him on a mission to Paris. On October 24, 1860, he entered the foreign service. In 1864 Alberto Blanc was Alfonso La Marmora's chief of staff .

In March 1866 he was sent to Constantinople with Emilio Visconti-Venosta , as his legation secretary . Marchese Visconti-Venosta was recalled immediately upon arrival and became a minister in Bettino Ricasoli's government. From August 3 to October 3, 1866, after the end of the war with Austria , Alberto Blanc took part in the negotiations for the Peace of Vienna . On May 4, 1867, he was sent to London for a conference on the Luxembourg crisis. In 1868 he was chargé d'affaires in Vienna . After the Battle of Sedan , in September 1870, he negotiated with Pius IX. the Roman question in the camp of Raffaele Cadorna the Elder . From October 27, 1870 to May 28, 1871 he was ambassador next to the Real Sitio de San Lorenzo de El Escorial , in 1871 he moved to Brussels as ambassador .

Victor Emanuel II knighted him in 1873 . From November 12, 1875 to 1880 he was ambassador to Washington, DC , where he married Dolores Natica Terry on May 12, 1878. From February 3, 1887 to October 2, 1891 he was ambassador at the high gate in Constantinople . On August 6, 1888, he was general agent for the Convention on the Free Use of the Suez Canal . In 1892 he was of Umberto I to Senator appointed. From December 15, 1893 to March 10, 1896, he was Foreign Minister in the cabinet of Francesco Crispi . His tenure as foreign minister ended as a result of the government crisis and the resignation of Crispi after the defeat of the Italian troops in the Battle of Adua against the army of the Ethiopian emperor Menelik II.
