After the occupation of Rome by the Allies in 1944, the Senate was reactivated and on July 20, 1944, Tomasi was elected President. After a referendum on June 2 and 3, 1946, resulted in a majority in favor of the abolition of the monarchy and the royal family left the country on June 18, Tomasi resigned as President of the Senate on June 25.

At the same time as the referendum, the election for the National Constituent Assembly took place, where Tomasi was elected. After the reorganization of the Senate , he was a member again from 1948 to 1953.
