Onorato Caetani, 15th Duke of Sermoneta, Duke of San Marco, 4th Prince of Teano, Margrave of Cisterna, Lord of Ninfa, San Donato and Bassano (born January 18, 1842 , † September 2, 1917 in Rome ) was an Italian Large landowner , lawyer and politician. From March 10 to July 11, 1896 he was Foreign Minister of his country in the Rudini government (2nd) .

Life

After studying law at the University of Rome , which he graduated in 1863, Caetani went to Great Britain for several years , where in 1867 he became Ada, b. Bootle-Wilbraham, sister of the 1st Earl of Lathom and 2nd Baron Skelmersdale , married. The marriage resulted in five sons and a daughter, and one of the sons later also became an Italian senator.

Political career

In 1872 Caetani was elected to the Italian Chamber of Deputies for the Velletri constituency for the first time, to which he was a member until 1911. That year he was appointed Senator for Life. From December 1890 to November 1892 he was (appointed) mayor of Rome. Although his tenure as Foreign Minister was short, it is significant in that it was when Italy began to turn away from the Triple Alliance and move closer to the French Third Republic .

Others

From 1879 to 1887 Caetani was President of the Italian Geographical Society . In this role, he promoted both geography lessons in general education schools and the emergence of colonial interests in Italy. The 3rd International Congress of Geographers in Venice in 1881 also fell during his term of office .

From 1879 to 1883 and from 1893 to 1900 he was President of the Philharmonic Academy of Rome.

In Sermoneta and Fondi there is a Via Onorato Caetani in his memory.
