The Società Geografica Italiana (SGI) is an Italian scientific society based in the Villa Celimontana in Rome . The "Italian Geographical Society" promotes and supports geographical research and public interest in geography .

history

The SGI was founded in Florence in 1867 . In 1872 she moved to Rome, where she was temporarily housed in various buildings for several decades, including the Palazzo del Collegio Romano . In 1925 the Palazzetto Mattei in the Villa Celimontana was assigned to her as the permanent seat, and she moved into it the following year.

From 1869 the SGI organized several expeditions to Africa , Asia and Latin America , some of which served the Italian colonial policy. The society also studied the emigration of Italians, helped improve curricula , dealt with soil protection and earthquakes, and also conducted agricultural research.

Today's activities

As a non-profit organization , the SGI organizes congresses, meetings, seminars, exhibitions, excursions and trips. In addition to her currently limited research activities, she prepares reports for environmental impact assessments and hazard maps on request . It is also involved in landscape protection and development cooperation .

The society works nationally and internationally with a number of organizations, including the "Association of Italian Geographers" (Associazione dei Geografi Italiani) , the "Italian Association for Cartography" (Associazione Italiana di Cartografia) , the "Association of Italian Geography Teachers " (Associazione Italiana Insegnanti di Geografia) , the Touring Club Italiano , the Club Alpino Italiano , the Società Geologica Italiana , the Military Geographical Institute of Florence , the Italian Antarctic Program and the Agenzia Spaziale Italiana .

The SGI is a member of the European Society for Geography (EUGEO), which is based in the Villa Celimontana, and the International Geographical Union , whose archive is also located in the Villa Celimontana.

The SGI has published the journal Bollettino della Società Geografica Italiana since 1868 and an annual report on immigration, infrastructure, urban areas, landscape and tourism since 2003. The Memorie della Società Geografica Italiana are historically significant .

For special achievements in the field of geography, the society awards the Premio Società Geografica Italiana (with an honorary name that changes every year) and the Premio La Navicella d'Oro .

Library

The association's library is the largest in Italy and one of the largest in the world for specialized geography libraries . Its inventory includes over 400,000 volumes, 2,000 periodicals (500 current), over 100,000 cards, over 150,000 photographs , negatives and films.
