Felice Napoleone Canevaro, Duke of Castelvari and Zoagli , Count of Santandero (born July 7, 1838 in Lima , † December 30, 1926 ) was an Italian naval officer and politician. From June 1 to 29, 1898, he was Minister of the Navy in the Rudini cabinet (5th) , and then until May 14, 1899, Foreign Minister of his country in the first Pelloux cabinet .

Life and military career

Canevaro was born in the Peruvian capital Lima as the son of immigrant parents from Liguria (then part of the Kingdom of Sardinia ) and entered the Sardinian naval school in Genoa in 1852 at the age of 14 . In 1855 he became ensign 2nd class, in 1859 he took part in the second Italian War of Independence as a sub-lieutenant at sea on the ships Beroldo and Des Geneys . In the summer of 1860 he formally resigned from the Sardinian Navy to take part in Giuseppe Garibaldi's Platoon of a Thousand . In the autumn of the same year he rejoined the royal navy and took part in the naval actions in the wake of the Italian unification. In the following years he served on various ships and slowly rose in rank. In the Third Italian War of Independence in 1866, he took part in the naval battle of Lissa as Augusto Riboty's chief of staff . Frigate captain since 1869, he was Italian naval attaché in London from March 1874 to August 1876 , before he circled the world eastwards as commander of the Colombo from January 1877 to March 1879 and was promoted to sea captain on his return. In 1887 he became Rear Admiral and in 1893 Vice Admiral, his positions alternating between the management of mainland naval facilities (e.g. Deputy Commander of the Naval School, Chief of Staff of the Navy, Commander of the Naval Arsenal of Taranto ) and the command of larger ships or ship formations (e.g. Commander of the Italian Association and then Commander-in-Chief of the United Ship Associations off Crete in the Turkish-Greek War of 1897). From 1896 he was also a judge at the Supreme War and Navy Tribunal.

After resigning as foreign minister, Canevaro became head of department in the Department of the Navy and then President of the Supreme Council of the Navy before retiring in 1903.

Political career

From November 1882 to September 1892 Canevaro was a member of the Italian Chamber of Deputies for a constituency in Genoa, and in October 1896 he was appointed senator for life. His tenure as foreign minister was marked by loyalty to the Triple Alliance and by seeking an understanding with Great Britain . Within this framework he also sought (despite the " Raheita incident") a certain relaxation of relations with France . His unfortunate behavior in an attempt to obtain an Italian lease or colonial area on the Chinese coast - the Bay of Sanmen was thought of - contributed greatly to the resignation of the first Pelloux government. He was therefore no longer a member of the second Pelloux government.

Others

From March 1906 to May 1909 Canevaro was president of the Marineliga ( Lega navale italiana ), an organization that still exists today; he was also active as a retiree in the National Committee for the History of the Risorgimento .

In Perugia there is a street "Via Felice Napoleone Canevaro" in his memory.

Of his six brothers, three achieved important positions in Peru: the eldest, José Francisco Canevaro, became chairman of the Supreme Commercial Court ( Tribunal del Consulado de Lima ) and Vice-President of Peru, the fourth eldest, Rafael Canevaro, judge at this Supreme Commercial Court, and the fifth eldest, César Canevaro, General, Mayor of the capital Lima, President of the Chamber of Deputies and Senate in Peru and Vice President of the country.
