The Lega Navale Italiana (LNI) is an Italian public body that has the purpose of the interest in the maritime , on water , on marine protection and generally of issues with maritime relevance to promote. Established in 1897, LNI is based in Rome .

activities

The LNI organizes courses, seminars and other events. It imparts skills in various water sports and prepares students for examinations to obtain certificates of competence such as sailing licenses and sports boat driving licenses. It cooperates with the Ministry of Transport in defining course content and examination parameters and also designates members of examination boards . The focus of the social activities related to the sea are young people and the disabled. Environmental protection and the cultivation of the seaman's culture are of particular importance . For certain events, training ships are made available to the LNI , including the Amerigo Vespucci .

The classic activities of a naval association , i.e. the concentration on military issues and the interests of the Italian Navy , are no longer the focus today.

The LNI works in its field of activity with the public administration and with associations of the Italian Olympic Committee . Internationally, the LNI cooperates with comparable organizations.

organization

Central organs of the LNI are the national board of directors, the general assembly, the management advisory board, the arbitration tribunal and a supervisory body. The Chairman appoints so-called "regional delegates" to represent him in the regions of Italy. There are a total of 250 sections or other branches with a total of around 60,000 members in the regions. The national chairman reports to three national training centers in Sabaudia (at the rowing center of the Navy), at the Lido delle Nazioni near Ferrara and in Taranto (at the NCO School of the Navy). The LNI maintains several study centers of which the one on seaman's culture based in Naples is of particular importance.

The LNI is overseen by the Ministries of Defense and Transport and controlled by the Court of Auditors .

history

The proposal to found the Lega Navale Italiana came in 1894 from the teacher, journalist, writer, naval historian and former naval officer Augusto Vittorio Vecchi, also known under the pseudonym Jack La Bolina . Vecchi founded the Regio Yacht Club Italiano in Genoa in 1880 . With some like-minded people he founded the Central Committee of the LNI in La Spezia on June 2, 1897 and shortly afterwards the magazine Lega Navale . Two years later, the first general assembly approved the statute of the organization, Rear Admiral Emilio Renaud di Falicon was appointed chairman of the LNI, and Lieutenant General Gaetano Limo became the general secretary. The first LNI sections were created in Milan , Rome and Venice . In 1903 the central organs of the LNI moved from La Spezia to Rome.

In the early 1930s, the LNI played a key role in the planning and implementation of the Monumento al Marinaio d'Italia in Brindisi . Several other monuments also go back to initiatives by the LNI. Under the auspices of the LNI, members sailed around the world in 1938, from Rapallo to New York City in 1949, and to Buenos Aires in 1954 . In 1972, the Milan section organized participation in the Observer Singlehanded Transatlantic Race . In the following year, the motor sailor San Giuseppe Due with the LNI-Stand Anzio left for Antarctica for a scientific expedition under Giovanni Ajmone Cat. Two LNI yachts took part in the first Whitbread Round the World Race in 1973 . In the decades that followed, a number of LNI members received awards at sailing and water sports competitions.

In 1975 the LNI was transformed from a corporation under private to public law. On June 2, 1997, the LNI celebrated its centenary. With a decree of December 17, 2001, the Ministry of the Environment recognized the LNI as an environmental protection organization ; on April 4, 2002, the Ministry of Labor and Social Affairs registered it as a non-profit organization . In 2003 the Ministries of Defense and Transport approved the new statute.
