The Monumento al Marinaio d'Italia is a Marine - Memorial in Brindisi , Italy . It was from 1932 to 1933 to commemorate the the First World War fallen Italian sailors built. A central component of the memorial is a tower that has a certain similarity to that of the German naval memorial Laboe .

prehistory

The city of Brindisi was chosen by Benito Mussolini by decision of June 20, 1925 for the construction of the memorial because its port had played a strategically important role in the control of the Adriatic during the war ( Otranto lock ). The design submitted in 1927 by the architect Saverio Dioguardi (1888–1961) remained on paper because the donations were insufficient. The funds raised up to 1932 then enabled the realization of a memorial complex with a tower and a small park, designed by the architect Luigi Brunati and the sculptor Amerigo Bartoli (1890–1971). Construction work began on October 28, 1932, and the inauguration took place on November 4, 1933.

Brief description

The memorial is located on the Posillipo embankment in the Casale district, around 400 meters west of the entrance to the inner harbor. It is surrounded by a fortress-like complex that, when viewed from above, has the shape of a stylized flying bird. From Piazzale Superiore in the north, two flight of stairs lead to the lower square on the bank. They are flanked by guns and anchors from Austrian warships. In between is the tower, which has the shape of an oar. On the side of the upper square the height of the tower is 53 meters, on the side of the lower square it is 68 meters. The reinforced concrete tower was faced with Carparo stone from Apulia . Above is a small viewing platform , just below it on the lake side in a wall niche a ten-ton statue of the Madonna , in the tower base a 27-meter-long crypt . In the crypt, which is modeled on a capsized ship's hull, the names of almost 6,000 seamen who died in the First World War were engraved, and in 1965 there were also plaques for around 34,000 seamen who died in the Second World War . In the chancel there is a bronze statue of Stella Maris .
