Joseph Fraenkel

Joseph Fraenkel (born July 4, 1867 , † April 24, 1920 in New York City ) was an Austrian-American doctor ( neurologist ).

Life

Fraenkel studied medicine at the University of Vienna , where he graduated in 1889. He decided against converting to Christianity and immigrated to the United States. There he began treatment in a poor neighborhood. Jakob Schiff later offered him a position at the Montefiori Hospital , of which he became director.

In 1905 and 1906 he was chairman of the New York Neurological Society . In 1909 he founded the Neurological Institute of New York with Joseph Collins . After he left this he became a successful neuroendocrinologist .

During Gustav Mahler's stay in New York from December 1907 to March 1908, he met him and Alma Mahler . The friendship solidified during their second stay in New York, which lasted from November 1909 to April 1910. After Mahler's death in 1911 he came to Vienna and proposed marriage to Alma Mahler, which she refused. Instead, he married Ganna Walska in 1916 .
