Augusto Riboty
Augusto Riboty (born November 28, 1816 in Puget-Théniers near Nice , † February 9, 1892 in Nice) was an Italian admiral and Minister of the Navy .
Riboty was trained at the Naval School in Genoa . In the First Italian War of Independence he fought in the Adriatic Sea from 1848–1849, in the Crimean War in 1855–1856 and in the Third War of Independence in 1866 under Persano in the naval battle of Lissa , in which he damaged the Austrian emperors with his ship Re di Portogallo and then isolated himself against the Attack defended by three enemy ironclads . For this he was promoted to rear admiral.
In 1866 Riboty was involved with his squadron in the suppression of uprisings in Palermo . 1868-1869 he held the office of Minister of the Navy, the year after he was appointed senator . As Minister of the Navy he put some senior admirals into retirement, but included himself in this measure in order not to expose himself to suspicion of taking advantage . From 1871 to 1873 he was again Minister of the Navy, after which he represented the constituency of Ancona as a member of parliament . His successor as Minister of the Navy was Simone Pacoret de Saint Bon .
Augusto Riboty died in Nice in 1892. The Italian Navy later named a Mirabello-class destroyer (1917–1950) after him.
