Babe Paley

Barbara "Babe" Cushing Mortimer Paley (born July 5, 1915 in Boston , Massachusetts , † July 6, 1978 in Manhattan , New York City ) was an American society lady and fashion icon of the 20th century.

Life

Paley was the daughter of Harvey Cushing , a neurosurgeon and professor of surgery at Johns Hopkins , Yale and Harvard Universities , and his wife, Katharine Stein Crowell Cushing.

In October 1934, while studying at Westover School in Middlebury , Connecticut , she made her debut in society, in the presence of the sons of President Franklin D. Roosevelt . Her debut attracted a lot of attention during the Great Depression and marked the beginning of her career as a socialite. In 1934 she graduated from Winsor School in Boston, Massachusetts.

In 1938 she began her work as a fashion - editor for Vogue in New York. Because of this, she had access to designer clothes. This led to her luxurious and glamorous lifestyle. In 1941, Time Magazine selected Babe Paley as the second best-dressed woman in the world, after Wallis Simpson and ahead of Aimée de Heeren . She was later added to the list of Best Dressed Women in 1945 and 1946.

After their second marriage, Paley quit her job at Vogue in 1947 .

In 1958 it was in the International Best Dressed List ( International Best Dressed List ) was added.
