In the sadness of the gray and dirty Ruhr area of the 1980s, the rowdies spend their time drinking, hanging out or vandalism. Since there is always a lack of money, you can get hold of it by scrounging and also through criminal actions. In addition, the “Sharks” are in rivalry with the “Rats”, a predominantly Turkish gang led by Hasan. The film begins with a meeting of the two gangs. The leaders demarcate their territories and agree a truce. Opinions are divided in Richie's gang; some members hope that the ceasefire will end soon anyway. Richie's little brother Jürgen, called Mücke , still lives with his parents. When he was once again brutally beaten by his drunken father, he ran away from home. On the street he met the young Turk Erdal when he was being followed by another gang. Both continue to flee together and can escape. Finally, Mücke goes to the abandoned factory building that the "Sharks" use as their hangout . He asks Richie to be allowed to join the "Sharks". But Richie is anything but enthusiastic and throws Mücke out of the headquarters by force. Mücke has become friends with Erdal, until Erdal tells him that he is a member of the "Rats". The battle between “Rats” and “Sharks” escalates when the “Rats” burn down the quarters of their competitors who are currently on tour. The next morning the leadership group of the Sharks turns up in the hangout of the "Rats". Richie's people throw some of the “Rats” robes captured in a fight into a heap and pour gasoline over them. Richie lights it up and formally declares war on Hasan. A decisive battle is agreed. This happens at the end of the film. All members of both gangs, heavily armed with chains and iron bars, take part. Richie is stabbed to death by Hasan, who flees. Mücke finds his brother dead. He takes the habit from him and puts it on himself. Shortly afterwards, a large number of police arrives at the scene.
