Fryderyk Gabowicz (born February 27, 1947 ; † June 5, 2007 in Munich ) was a German photographer of Israeli origin.

Life

Gabowicz was the son of a German and a Russian and grew up near Tel Aviv until he came to the Federal Republic of Germany in 1963. After studying mechanical engineering, he first worked as a designer of aircraft engine parts, but then decided to pursue a career as a photographer. First he got a job with Rocky magazine, and Cliff Richard was the first musician he portrayed.

From 1979 he worked for BRAVO and one year later became the successor to the photographer Wolfgang Heilemann , who discovered and promoted him. Gabowicz ran a photo studio in Munich, where he photographed almost all the stars of the music business of the 1980s and 1990s, including Tina Turner , Madonna , Bon Jovi , The Cure , Azhar Kamal , Billy Idol and Aerosmith . He photographed Muhammad Ali's boxing match in Munich's Olympia Hall for BILD and the Rolling Stones hired him for aerial photos at an open-air concert.

Gabowicz was self-taught , so he had never trained as a photographer, but he played bass in a rock band in the 1960s and knew everyday life in show business. As a result, it was not difficult for him to gain the necessary trust from celebrities and to build up a certain closeness that you need for photo work. He had a friendly relationship with many artists that went far beyond an employment relationship. This included Robbie Williams , with whom he worked frequently since 1990. He accompanied Die Toten Hosen over twenty years of their career. The result was photos that were collected in an illustrated book with a biographical character, which was published in 2006 by Schwarzkopf & Schwarzkopf Verlag .

In 2005 Gabowicz suffered two strokes from which he never fully recovered. He died on June 5, 2007 in Munich.
