Anthony Eric "Tony" James (born April 12, 1953 in Market Drayton ) is a British musician. He became known as the bassist and songwriter of the punk band Generation X and as the guitarist of the band Sigue Sigue Sputnik .

Career

The first notable band James was a member of was the London punk band London SS , which he joined in 1975. In 1976 he left the band with drummer John Towe to join the punk band Chelsea . Together with Towe and guitarist Billy Idol , he left the band three months later to found Generation X. This band separated in 1981. In the following years, James worked as a songwriter (including Russian Roulette for The Lords of the New Church ) and producer (including for Sex Gang Children ).

In 1982 he founded Sigue Sigue Sputnik with Martin Degville , with whom he realized a UK top ten album and two equally successful singles. In 1989, Sigue Sigue Sputnik split due to unsuccessfulness.

In the same year James joined The Sisters of Mercy as bassist; he held out there until 1991. In the same year and 2001 there were Sigue Sigue Sputnik Reunions; In 2003 the band was finally put aside. From 1993 to 1996 James was the head of a rock / pop band called Fin de Siècle , which released an album. In 2003 James founded the alternative duo Carbon / Silicon together with former The Clash guitarist Mick Jones , which lasted until at least 2013 and released several albums. He continues to work as a producer, so u. a. for the Spanish electro -Formation Fangoria .

In 2016 James completed a one-hour concert in Los Angeles as "Generation Sex" together with Billy Idol (ex-Generation X), Steve Jones (ex- Sex Pistols ) and Paul Cook (ex-Sex Pistols) . So far nothing is known about further activities of this “punk supergroup ”.

Private

James holds a degree in Mathematics and Computer Science from Brunel University , London. Before his musical career he worked as a programmer. He has a son, Sebastian Pacher, who works as a producer for the British subsidiary of RT television .
